The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday approved a TK 165 crore project to strengthen road safety across the country through improving some countrywide 144 accident-prone or black spots on national highways.
The approval came from the Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room at city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with Ecnec chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said a total of eight development projects were approved in today’s meeting with a total outlay of TK 2,887.28 crore.
“Of the total project cost, TK 1383.48 crore will come from the national exchequer, while TK 6.71 crore from the organisation’s own fund and TK 1,497.09 crore in project assistance,” he said.
The Roads and Highways Department will implement the project, titled ‘Improvement of Road Safety at Black Spots on National Highways’ by June 2016.
Under the project, the Planning Minister said, there will be development of intersections on the highways, improvement of pedestrian crossings, simplification of road turnings, removal of eyesight obstacles, establishment of signs, signals and road markings.
Of the total 144 black spots on highways, Mustafa Kamal said 34 are in Dhaka, six in Gopalganj, eight in Comilla, 14 in Sylhet, 11 in Khulna, two in Barisal, 35 in Rangpur and 34 in Rajshahi districts.
Answering to a question, he said the work on the project will start soon.
Aiming to address the accommodation problem for the government employees in the capital, the Ecnec meeting approved ‘Construction of Multi-storey Residential Building at Azimpur Government Colony’ involving TK 220.45 crore to be implemented by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works by June 2018.
Under the project, there will be two 20-storey buildings having 152 flats with each flat being 1000 square feet in size while another four 20-storey buildings will be built having 304 flats each 800 square feet in size.
Another project, titled ‘Construction of multi-storey residential buildings at Motijheel Government Colony’ was approved with an outlay of TK 176.42 crore, which will be completed by June 2018. Under the project, four 20-storey buildings would be constructed having 532 flats of 650 square feet in size.
Currently, there is an accommodation facility for some 15,000 government officials and employees in the capital against the demand for three lakh, the Planning Minister said.
The Ecnec meeting also gave nod to the ‘Flood management and improvement of living standards in Haor areas’ with TK 993.38 crore to be implemented by the Ministry of Water Resources by June 2022. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide TK 594.46 crore in project assistance.
The project will be implemented in 32 upazilas of Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Brahmanbaria districts.
The other projects got approval at the Ecnec meeting are construction of switching system for rural electrification activities with TK 121.58 crore, construction of 3rd and 4th double gauge line on Dhaka-Tongi section of Bangladesh Railway and construction of dual gauge double line on Tongi-Joydevpur section of Bangladesh Railway with TK 1106.80 crore (1st revised) with Indian credit of TK 902.63 crore, construction of Matlab Bridge over the Dhonagoda River with TK 84.61 crore and expansion of mobile library programme of Bishwasahitya Kendra with TK 19.04 crore.
Ministers, State Ministers, Planning Commission members and secretaries concerned attended the meeting.
