ECNEC approves road project to bolster India-BD trade

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved the ‘Inter-District Border Road Construction: Mymensingh and Netrakona Districts Part’ with a projected amount of Tk 457.30 crore.
The aim of the project is to bolster the connectivity as well as the trade relation with India. The said project was approved in the 20th ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal at the conference room of the NEC in the city. ECNEC President and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, a total of eight projects were approved involving Tk 2,865.04 crore. “Of the total project cost, Tk 1,536.43 crore will come from the national exchequer, while Tk 1,328.61 crore as project assistance,” the minister said.
The Planning Minister informed newsmen that per capita income also increased slightly to $1316 from $1314 due to slight rise of GDP growth to 6.55 per cent in the last fiscal (2014-15) from the provisional figure of 6.51 per cent.
According to the Planning Commission, Roads and Highways Department will implement the Inter- District Border Road Construction project by June 2019.
The project will be implemented at Durgapur and Kalmakanda upazilas of Netrakona and Haluaghat and Dhobaura upazilas of Mymensingh.
Under the project, an 80-kilometer road will be constructed as part of the 214-kilometer long Sunamganj-Netrakona-Mymensingh-Sherpur-Jamalpur road.
In Netrakona part, the proposed border of road begins at Moheshkhola, the connecting point of Sunamganj and Netrakona, and ends at Tinali area on the Birishiri-Bijoypur Land Port Road.
Another 44-kilometer of road in Mymensingh part (Hatipagar-Bijoypur) is a connecting road for the bordering districts.
