The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Thursday approved eight projects, including the project for increasing capacity of Dhaka-Chittagong main power grid.
The estimated cost of the eight projects is Taka 7,868.30 crore, of which Taka 4301 crore will come as project assistance.
The approval was given at a meeting of the ECNEC held at NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presiding.
Speaking at a press briefing after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the government’s plan is to supply power to every house by 2021.
“With this goal, we are giving importance to expanding electricity transmission lines and other infrastructure development along with increasing power generation,” he said.
The government has undertaken various projects to set up coal-based power plants to reduce pressure on natural gas, he said, adding that the construction of a 1200-MW power plant at Matarbari is currently underway with the funding of JAICA.
To supply this plant’s electricity to Dhaka, the ‘Dhaka-Chittagong Main Power Grid Strengthening’ project has been undertaken, the minister said.
He said when implemented, this project will ensure constant power transmission to Dhaka and Chittagong along with meeting the growing demand of electricity in Chittagong.
