Election Commission (EC) will call for help of the law enforcement agencies if any chaos triggers from the Jatiya Oikyafront’s proposed ‘Foot March’ towards EC Bhaban, said EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmad.
The EC secretary’s remarks came in reply to a question at a press briefing at the Election Bhaban at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city on Wednesday evening.
“If there is any chaos during the march, we obviously will call for help of the law enforcement agencies,” Helaluddin Ahmad said.
He also reiterated the decision of announcement of election schedule on Thursday evening.
“We have all out cooperation of the law enforcement agencies to maintain stability and peace for holding election,” the secretary said, adding, “EC will take decision over situation.”
‘The March towards EC Bhaban is one of a series of programmes demonstrated by Dr Kamal Hossain led Jatiya Oikyafront to press the government to accept its demands, including a non-partisan interim government for holding the 11th Parliamentary polls, dissolution of the Parliament, recasting election commission and freeing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, former members of the Parliament and all other opposition leaders and activists.
However, the date of ‘Foot March’ towards EC is yet to be confirmed by the Oikyafront.
The alliance held dialogue twice with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on November 1 and November 7, which does not bring in satisfactory outcomes.
“We are in movement,” Oikyafront spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters at a press conference after the meeting with the Prime Minister on Wednesday.
He said Oikyafront will start a ‘Road March’ programme towards Rajshahi today (Thursday) and address a rally in Rajshahi city on Friday (October 9).
