EC to probe participation of govt doctors, nurses in CCC polls campaign

Election Commission will probe the alleged participation of govt doctors and nurses and the CCC employees in campaign for various candidates in the upcoming city polls.
 The commission on Friday sent letters to Chittagong Medical College’s principal and director of the hospital informing about the probe decision.
The letters, signed by Returning Officer Abdul Baten, said an interaction was held at the Shah Alam Birottom Auditorium of the medical college in support of a mayoral aspirant.
“Several doctors, nurses, officials and employees of your institution attended that meeting. The media have reported it and Election Commission inspectors also have the similar information,” letters said.
Referring to the electoral code of conduct, the commission said no government officials could take part in polls campaign for any candidate.
 Assistant Returning Official Shafiqur Rahman told that the commission had assigned an officer to find out which doctors, nurses, officials and employees had taken part in the meeting.
 The CMC principal and CMCH director have been asked to provide a list of those who attended the meeting. Actions will be taken against the participants after investigation, he said.
The returning officer sent another letter to the Chittagong City Corporation chief executive officer stating that several officials and employees of the corporation were involved in campaigning for several candidates.
The commission also asked the CCC chief executive officer to take actions against them after investigation of their participation in favour of any candidates of the mayoral race in Chittagong.
BNP demands deployment of army again : President of city BNP of Chittagong and Advisor to the BNP chairperson Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury demanded immediate deploy of army personnel in the city for holding fair and free CCC election . He disclosed it again at a press meet arranged at his residence at Mehdibagh in city yesterday afternoon.
The press meet was told that the activists of student front and youth front of the ruling party are obstructing the election campaign of the BNP backed mayor and councilor candidates.
He also told the newsmen that ruling party men are hiring terrors from outside of the city to work in their favour and turning the posters of the BNP supported candidates. He further said if the situation continues during campaign period, it will be hard for us to contest the election by our supported candidates.
He repeatedly requesting the Election commission to deploy armed forces ahead of election date. Among others, former whip Syed Wahidul Alam, ccentral BNP member Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, city vice president Abu Sufian and vice president Shamsul Alam were present in it, a CUA release said.
