Renewing its demand for army deployment during the city polls, BNP on Saturday warned the Election Commission that it will have to face trial in people’s court if it fails to hold the city polls in a free and fair manner.
“We call upon the Election Commission to check the violation of the election code of conduct by ruling party men and take actions against those flouted the polls conduct. We want a fair election, while the voters want to exercise their franchisee in a peaceful manner,” said BNP standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah.
He further said, “If the Election Commission fails to hold fair polls, legal action will be taken against them for their misdeeds. We’ ll also try them in people’s court, if necessary.”
Hannan Shah, the convener of BNP’s election steering committee formed to oversee the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls, issued the threat at a press conference at DSCC mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas’ Shahjahanpur election office.
The BNP leader demanded the government deploy army in the elections to Dhaka south, Dhaka north and Chittagong city corporations at least two days ahead of the polls.
“As a former army officer, I can say there will be use of keeping army inside parliament during the polls. Army will have to deploy at every vulnerable polling stations. We’re now not requesting, but demanding the army to be deployed in the election areas at least two day’s before the polls,” Hannan Shah said.
He alleged that the BNP-backed contestants are facing obstructions at every place during their electioneering.
The BNP leader also alleged that the ruling party and law enforcers are giving their polling agents threat in a bid to prevent them from going to polling stations.
