Election Commission acting Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed on Sunday said the decision on the by-polls to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be taken within the next couple of days.
“The Commission will sit in a meeting within one or two days and take decision on the by-election to
the DNCC mayor post,” he told reporters in the city’s Nirbachon Bhaban. The EC acting secretary said he thinks there is no legal complexity over holding the by-polls with inclusion of the new 18 wards in the DNCC area as the Local Government ministry earlier asked the Election Commission to arrange election to the councillor posts in the new wards. The Election Commission in the meeting will also examine the legal ground whether the by-polls will be held with the new 18 wards before taking the decision on the DNCC by-polls, said Helaluddin. The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last.
The Commission has the legal obligation to complete the by-election within 90 days after the post fell vacant.
