Apparently dissatisfied over the growing violation of electoral code of conduct by ministers, lawmakers and other concerned government officials, the Election Commission (EC) has sought the Prime Minister’s intervention in checking it.
The Commission also requested the ministers and MPs not to violate the electoral code of conduct to make the upcoming municipality polls free and fair.
“Though the Commission is an independent and constitutional body, the election is going to be held under the government. So, if the polls are marred with violation and irregularities, that will dent the government’s image,” said Election Commissioner M Shah Newaz while taking to journalists at EC Secretariat on Sunday.
He also asked the returning officers to take necessary actions if someone violates the electoral code of conducts. “We want to hold a free, fair and inclusive election.”
“The Commission will give the returning officers all-out support. We ask them to take action against irregularities without any fear,” Shah Newaz said.
The Commissioner also urged those in the government, including elected ones, to play a responsible role to help the Commission hold a free and fair election.
“We hope those who are in the government will be more responsible than others. We request those who are elected and with the government to cooperate with us in keeping the image of both the government and the Commission unharmed,” Shah Newaz added.
