EC planning second phase of UP election

Election Commission (EC) is thinking to arrange second phase of Union Parishad (UP) polls along with postponed first phase UP’s amid deadly coronavirus pandemic. By-election of few constituency’s polls will be held also.
Decision will be taken next EC meeting which is going to held on May 19, EC sources said.
However, on April 1, EC has postponed by-polls of Laxmipur-2 constituency, 371 Union Parishads and 11 municipalities (sixth phase) were scheduled for April 11.
Source said, EC’s 79th meeting is being call for on May 19. In the letter it is said to present four Commissioners, EC Secretary and related all officials where CEC KM Nurul Huda will preside the meeting. Not only UP but also postponed all elections keep on discussion.
Source said, about 4,554 Union Parishads are in Bangladesh. Last UP elections had been held on March-June, 2016. During 2016, those UP’s elections held on first phase, now on second phase these will be Prioritized.
The topics for May 19 meeting are- by-polls of Dhaka-14, Sylhel-3, Comilla-5 vacant constituency including with postponed Laxmipur-2. Sixth phase municipalities where 11 municipality were scheduled for election, investigative report on Laxmipur’s Raypur municipal election and miscellaneous, source said.
When asked, EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said, there are 4-5 agenda for May 19 meeting. Those election postponed which scheduled on April 11 will be on discussion that how we can arrange them.
He said, we will continue to arrange all election. It is must have to arrange some polls for date expire problem.
He further said, there is nothing to do if Covid-19 situation get worsen during election.
