The Election Commission (EC) is taking initiative to make the National Identity Card (NID) amendment procedure easier. So, the Commission has decided to set up connectivity at the district level with the central server, enabling the citizens to get revised NID from the nearest office in future. NID will also be printed in districts.
EC sources said that the central server connectivity has already been given to Regional Election Offices. Presently the process of connectivity with district election offices is underway.
Officials of the National Identity Registration Department said that three types of applications are received for NID. Error corrections, change of address, and extraction of lost or lost cards.
After the connectivity at the regional level, the lost card can be withdrawn in a single day. There is no need to come to Dhaka for this. The decision to send two other types of applications to local officials will remain the same. Because, for the correctness or change of address, there is necessity of the approval of the Election Commission. In case of missing card withdrawal, Regional Officer can reprint only after being sure of missing card. Connectivity with the central server in the regional
election office has the advantage. The Election Commission has 10 Regional Offices. Those are in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Sylhet, Barisal, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rangpur, Faridpur and Rajshahi.
If any citizen of any of these districts loses or destroys their NID card, they would be able to withdraw from the concerned Regional Office. In this case, the concerned person will get laminated NID. To get a smart card, he has to wait. Because it will be sent to the concerned area after printing from Dhaka.
Officials say, if the district level connectivity is ensured, no one of any upazilla will have to go to the regional election office to withdraw the new card. Or they do not have to wait until the card is printed from the regional office. In this case, the EC is thinking about providing NID correction facilities in the district.
An official, who is reluctant to disclose the name, told the reporter that all the applications were sorted out from the center. It increased the workload of the NID wing threefold. Because, the NID wing man power less than 1 hundred. It is not possible to solve thousands of problems every day by manipulating this amount. This increases the sufferings of the people. Therefore, the Election Commission is decentralizing several works at the local level.
Recently, EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed gave instructions to the director general of NID wing regarding the decentralization of NID correction activities at the district level. It has been learned that the matter is being investigated whether there is currently a legal problem. If there is no obstacle in the law, the district level revision will also be taken soon.

Because a person from the village comes to Dhaka and spend a lot of time and money to take delivery or amend the NID. It’s probably not possible for everyone. So, the idea of decentralization of services at the district level is aimed at reaching the doorstep of the NID.
