The BNP on Tuesday claimed that the present Election Commission (EC) has no authority, strength and ability to hold a single election in a fair manner.
“The EC has no authority, strength and ability and it will even fail to hold a single election in a fair manner,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while addressing a rally at the National Press Club.
The student leaders of 1990’s organized the rally.
The rally demanded proper medical treatment and unconditional release of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and scraping her illegal conviction.
Mirza Fakhurl said EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed now runs the Commission.
He alleged that the EC secretary goes to a special office of a certain party, indicating ruling Awami League but without mentioning the name.
The BNP leader said the special office is used for that party’s election plan and prime minister’s adviser HT Imam heads it.
“HT Imam always used to meet the Election Commission before each election and held meeting with officials before the latest city corporation elections in Gazipur. HT Imam even claimed recently that he accomplished the January 5, 2014 general election by officials,” Fakhrul said.
He also strongly criticised the Dhaka University authorities for imposing restrictions on holding rally and meeting on the campus.
“Dhaka University is the place for free thinking and the university had always
showed the path to people of Bangladesh. Now the university is fettered. It seemed as if the country went back to regime of Pakistani military ruler Ayub Khan,” Fakhrul said.
Former DUCSU Vice-President Amanullah Aman, also BNP Chairperson’s Adviser, presided over the function.
BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, central leaders Habibur Rahman Habib, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Mustafizur Rahman Babul, Nazim Uddin Alam, Rafik Sikdar, Jagpa General Secretary Khandaker Lutfar Rahman and Joint-General Secretary Asaduzzaman Asad were present, among others.
