A total of around 500 applications have been submitted to the Election Commission seeking re-demarcation of the boundary of 55 parliamentary seats, according to EC sources.
They said, the applicants have urged for changing the boundary as per their own choice, not the EC’s proposed ones. Most of them put objections over the draft proposals of 29 constituencies. They are also aggrieved with the EC’s proposed boundary.
On the other hand, applications have also been submitted for re-settlement of 26 constituencies, which the EC is yet to make any change.
Earlier, the EC has published the draft proposals of 38 constituencies. Of them, 163 applicants are in favour of keeping the changed boundaries of 14 seats, they said.
Asked, EC Secretary Helal Uddin told The New Nation that a lot of applications had been received against the draft proposals for changing boundaries of the constituencies.
Now the EC will organize a hearing and finally publish the list. If any one has any argument, he/she can be present at the hearing, he said.
The EC sources said, the applications have been submitted by ministers, members of parliament
(MPs) and local people. Most of the ministers and MP’s do not want the change the boundary of their constituencies. They want to take part in the parliamentary elections with the present boundary.
The EC on March 14 published the draft proposal of 300 parliament seats with changing boundary of 38 seats. April 1 has been fixed to submit any objection or advice on the draft proposals.
According to EC officials, majority of the imcumbent and former MPs are in favour of keeping the present boundries.
They said, the applicantions belong to the leaders of the ruling party as well as the BNP. As an example, the BNP Join Sectery General Khairul Kabir Khokan has thanked the EC for the change of his constituency while BNP standing committee member Baristter Moudud Ahmed objectioned for his seat.
However, the EC emphacized on population, communication and integration of administration while making the changes of constituencies.
EC sources said,.objections have been submitted on 29 constituencies. They are – Rangpur-1 and 3, Nilphamari-3, Kurigram-4, Pabna-1 and 2, Magura-1 and 2, Khulna-4, Satkhira-4, Jamalpur -4, Dhaka-2, 3, 7, 14 and 19, Narayanganj-3, 4 and 5, Shariatpur-2 and 3, Maulvibazar-2, Brahmanbaria-6, Cumilla-1, 6 and 10, Noakhali -4 and 5 and Chattagram -7.
On the other hand, applications have been submitted for change in 14 seats. They are – Pabna-1, Kurigram-3 and 4, Satkhira -4, Jamalpur-4 and 5, Dhaka-3 and 19, Shariatpur-2, Brahmanbaria-5 and 6 and Comilla-1, 2 and 10.
This time, the EC does not make any change in 26 constituencies. But from the grassroots level, applications have also been submitted for the change of boundary of those constituencies. They are: Chapainawabganj-1, Sirajganj-1 and Jashore-4, Narail-1 and 2, Satkhira-2, Barguna-1, Pirojpur-1, 2 and 3, Manikganj-2, Dhaka-18, Gazipur-2 and 3, Narayanganj-2, Faridpur-2, 3 and 4, Sylhet-2 and 3, Brahmanbaria-1, Noakhali-1, Laxmipur-2 and Chattagram-14.
Meanwhile, Dhaka-3 MP Nasrul Hamid, former MP of Satkhira -4 Golam Reza and A K Fazlul Haque, Satkhira -3 MP A F M Ruhul Haque, Cumilla-6 MP A K M Baha Uddin have submitted objection for the change of their constituencies. They want to remain present position of their constituencies.
Objections were raised by Chattagram-7 MP Dr. Hasan Mahmud, Dhaka-2 MP Kamrul Islam, Magura-2 MP Dr. Biren Sikder, and Dhaka-14 MP Sabina Akhter Tuhin.
BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed also submitted objection about his constituency Noakhali-5. The possible MP candidate Mujahidur Rahman Helo Sarkar demanded change of boundaries for Narayanganj-2.
