Gonoforum yesterday recommended the president arrange a special session in the parliament to enact a law over the formation of the next Election Commission.
“Disappointment is prevailing among the people of the country on how the Election Commission was formed in the past. The EC failed to meet people’s expectations as it was formed without enacting a law,” Gonoforum, a component of Jatiya Oikyafront, said during a dialogue with President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban on Sunday evening.
In the hour-long dialogue, an eight-member delegation headed by Gonoforum Executive President Mokabbir Khan, MP, submitted a written letter to the president along with their recommendations.
They requested the president to take steps so that law enforcement agencies and other election-related institutions can play a neutral and non-partisan role to hold the free and fair election. The delegation went to Bangabhaban at 6:00 pm and came out at 7:00 pm.
“Casting vote in a free, fair and neutral manner in elections, is the basic right of every people in the country and that is why we recommended enacting law over the formation of EC,” Mokabbir said after the meeting.
Meanwhile, while meeting with President Abdul Hamid, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh recommended enacting a permanent law for the formation of EC.
“If the law cannot be formed due to lack of time, each registered political party can submit one name for chief election commissioner (CEC) and one for election commissioner to the search committee,” said Mahi B Chowdhury, presidium member and spokesperson of the party during the dialogue with the president.
A seven-member delegation led by Maj (retd) MA Mannan, Bikalpa Dhara secretary-general went to the Bangabhaban around 7:00 pm yesterday.
