The Election Commission on Tuesday asked the authorities concerned to take departmental actions against a presiding officer and police officials for their negligence in duty that led to the postponement of voting in two polling stations in
Comilla City Corporation election held on March 30 last.
The Commission issued two orders, both signed by its Deputy Secretary Nuruzzaman Talukder, asking Bangladesh Krishi Bank and the Public Safety Division of the Home Ministry to take the action.
In the orders, it was said the EC’s investigation found the evidence of negligence by the presiding officer of Chowara Islamia Fazil Madrasah polling station and the police officials, who were on duty at the two polling stations.
The EC asked the Public Safety Division Secretary and the Krishi Bank Managing Director to inform it as early as possible about what departmental actions are taken against them under Clause 5 of the Election Officers (Special Provision) Act, 1991.
The presiding officer is Md Zilani, senior officer of Bangladesh Krishi Bank’s Comilla main branch situated in Manoharpur.
However, the Commission did not mention the names of the two police officials, who were in-charge of Comilla Govt City College polling station (Centre No-81) and Chowara Islamia Fazil Madrasah polling station (Centre-101).
It also issued another notification asking the law enforcement agencies to intensify activities of their mobile teams and striking teams in election areas as the heads of the teams could not avoid the responsibility for their failure to prevent the anarchic situation in Comilla city election.
The notification, signed by Deputy Secretary Nuruzzaman Talukder, ordered the Inspector General of Police, Directors General of BGB, Ansar and VDP, and Rab to take necessary steps so that their members perform duty sincerely to prevent such untoward incident in the future taking lesson from the failures of their teams in Comilla city election.
The EC’s investigation report suggested that the chiefs of the law enforcement agencies will take more tough and effective steps to prevent the use and carrying of illegal arms and explosives from 2-3 days before the election to a day after the polls in the future.
