SCC polls expenditure: EC fixes Tk 15 lakh for Mayor candidates

Election commission has fixed highest Tk 15 lakh for mayor candidate and Tk six lakh for a councillor candidate as expenditures in the Sylhet City Corporation election 2018.
Four steps of election expenditure has been set for the councilors. The range is from minimum Tk one lakh to maximum Tk six lakh. In the ward, where voters number is 15 thousand, election expenditure is Tk one lakh; five thousand 1 to 30 thousand, Tk two lakh; 30 thousand
1 to 50 thousand, Tk 4 lakh and more than 50 thousand Tk six lakh only.
But, the candidates of Sylhet City Corporation have already crossed the ceiling set by the Election Commission. During the Eid-ul-fitr, the mayor and councilor candidates spent lot of money as charity. The city has already been decorated by the banners, leaflets, festoons and billboards. Apart from violating the Code of Conduct after the submission of nomination papers, Mayor, reserved councilor and general councilor candidates are campaigning with big purse.
It is mentionable that Sylhet City has nine reserved wards, 27 general wards, 321,732 voters (males 171,444 and females 150,288), 134 polling centres and 926 booths.
Six candidates are the mayor candidates, while 127 aspirants are vying for the general ward councillor posts and 56 for the reserved councillor positions.
Awami League’s Badar Uddin Kamran, BNP’s Ariful Haque Chowdhury, rebel candidate Badruzzaman Selim, Jamaat-e-Islam’s City’s Ameer Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, Central committee member of the Islamic Movement Dr. Moazzem Hossain and CPB-BSD nominated candidate Abu Zafar are contesting in Sylhet city polls.
