Election Commission has earmarked Tk. 15 lakh for mayoral candidate in the up-coming Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Election to be held on July 30th, 2018. On the other hand, EC also fixed Tk. One lakh each for councillor candidate against 15, 000 voters .
Besides, the expenditure has been fixed in four separate tires. The councillor candidates can spend 2 lakh each in ward numbers 5,7,8,9 and 10 in upcoming SCC polls. In remaining 22 wards out of total 27 ones, the councillor candidates can spend Tk. 1, 00000 each, confirmed SCC Election Returning Officer Alimuzzaman while talking to this correspondent.
Besides, the rate of expenditure per councillor candidate has been categorized in four classes. A councillor candidate shall spent Tk. One lakh for voters up-to 15, 000, Tk. Two lakh against 15,000-30,000 voters , Tk. 4 lakh against 30,001- 50,000 voters and Tk. 6 lakh have been earmarked for voters numbering above 50,000 for the up- coming SCC election . According to unofficial figures, the candidates have already spent lakhs of taka by setting up billboard, posters, leaflets and banners. During the occasion of Edul-Fitr, the candidates, even before filing nomination, spent huge amount of money. According unofficial figures, in order to mobilize unit leaders and activists, candidates have spent scores of thousand of taka in publicity. When contacted over Sylhet Regional Election Officer and SCC Returning Officer Alimuzzaman told this correspondent that the cost fixed up by Election Commission should be abided by all candidates, while submitting the return for election expenditure to the Election Commission.
