The voter turnout in the general election in 139 constituencies was 39.83 percent, the Election Commission Secretariat sources said on Tuesday, two days after the January-5 parliamentary elections were held on Sunday.
The commission on Sunday announced unofficially elected the candidates in 139 constituencies out of 147 where voting was held. The commission could not announce the final results of eight other parliamentary seats as re-voting in 392 polling stations will be needed which will be held on January 16.
Out of 41,521,371 voters in the 139 constituencies, a total of 16,535,944 exercised their franchise in the 10th parliamentary polls.Of the votes cast, 16,284,363 were found valid while 251,581 invalid.
The highest 90.36 percent turnout of voters was reported in Gopalganj-2 constituency where Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim was elected unofficially.
A total of 243,399 voters out of 269,370 exercised their voting rights in the parliamentary seat. Selim bagged 237,591 votes while his nearest rival Jatiya Party’s candidate Kazi Shahin polled 4,084.
The second highest 89.95 percent turnout was in Gopalganj-3 where Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina overwhelmed her nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate AZ Apu Sheikh by a huge margin.
Out of 211,951 voters, as many as 190,649 cast their votes in the constituency when Sheikh Hasina secured 187,185 votes while AZ Apu Sheikh bagged only 2,430.
The third highest 89.74 percent voter turnout was in Gopalganj-1 constituency where AL candidate Muhammad Faruk Khan won unofficially.
Faruk Khan got 240,304 votes while his nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate Dipa Majumder secured only 5,863. A total of 248,199 votes out of 276,576 were cast in the constituency.
The lowest 10.88 percent voter turnout was in Dhaka-15 where AL candidate Kamal Ahmed Majumder won the seat unofficially bagging 30,095 votes. A total of 34,754 votes out of 319,376 were cast in the constituency.
The second lowest 12.75 percent votes were cast in Bogra-4 where Jasad candidate AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen was elected unofficially securing only 22,203 votes. Out of 283,240 votes, only 36,107 votes were cast in the constituency.
The third lowest 14.53 percent votes were cast in Dhaka-14 constituency where Jatiya Party candidate Syed Abu Hossain Babla won the seat bagging only 17,772 votes out of 228,540. His nearest rival independent candidate Awlad Hossain polled 14,787 with elephant polls symbol.
Besides, above 50 percent voter turnout was in 36 constituencies that include Lalmonirhat-1 (70.48pc), Rangpur-6 (58.45pc), Jhenidah-1 (53.33pc), Barguna-2 (59.29pc), Patuakhali-3 (63.79pc), Bhola-2 (65.60pc), Bhola-3 (71.52pc), Barisal-2 (56.19pc), Barisal-4 (68.60pc), Jhalakati-1 (62.25pc), Jamalpur-1 (61.73pc), Jamalpur-2 (59.91pc), Jamalpur-5 (61.65pc), Sherpur-1 (68.32pc), Sherpur-2 (56.68pc), Mymensingh-6 (59.70pc), Mymensingh-10 (65.73pc), Netrakona-3 (61.03pc), Munshiganj-1 (55.32pc), Munshiganj-2 (53.59pc), Gazipur-4 (53.88pc), Narayanganj-1 (52.12pc), Faridpur-4 (53.67pc), Gopalganj-1 (89.74pc), Gopalganj-2 (90.36pc), Gopalganj-3 (89.95pc), Brahmanbaria-3 (63.97pc), Brahmanbaria-5 (55.39pc), Comilla-5 (67.51pc), Comilla-9 (54.83pc), Chittagong-3 (65.94pc), Chittagong-12 (56.27pc), Chittagong-13 (68.93pc), Chittagong-16 (58.16pc), Khagrachhari (50.33pc) and Rangamati (56.53pc).
Meanwhile, less than 30 percent voter turnout was in 37 constituencies that include Panchagarh-1 (26.16pc), Thakurgaon-1 (24.99pc), Dinajpur-5 (28.06pc), Dinajpur-6 (29.13pc), Nilphamari-1 (29.80pc), Lalmonirhat-3 (27.90pc), Rangpur-3 (17.98pc), Kurigram-1 (26.22pc), Gaibandha-2 (21.30pc), Bogra-4 (12.75pc), Naogaon-4 (29.48pc), Naogaon-5 (29.51pc), Rajshahi-3 (27.74pc), Jhenidah-3 (15.38pc), Khulna-2 (28.40pc), Satkhira-2 (16.59pc), Barisal-3 (27.90pc), Tangail-6 (23.76pc), Jamalpur-4 (25.21pc), Mymensingh-3 (29.23pc), Mymensingh-7 (26.04pc), Manikganj-1 (28.45pc), Dhaka-1 (27.43pc), Dhaka-4 (14.53pc), Dhaka-5 (28.11pc), Dhaka-6 (22.21pc), Dhaka-7 (25.82pc), Dhaka-15 (10.88pc), Dhaka-16 (18.35pc), Dhaka-17 (18.05pc), Sylhet-2 (23.33pc), Sylhet-4 (26.90pc), Moulvibazar-2 (20.29pc), Brahmanbaria-2 (23.81pc), Comilla-8 (27.34pc), Feni-3 (22.34pc) and Chittagong-9 (24.32pc).
The turnout of voters in 62 constituencies was between 30 percent and 50 percent.
On January 5, the arrangement of the voting in the 153 other constituencies was not needed as the parliamentary constituencies got single candidates who are set to be elected unopposed.
