Top leader of Jatiya Oikyafront and Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain on Wednesday said that the Election Commission assured them of ensuring a free, fair and credible election. “I hope they will live up to their commitment.”
He said, “We placed our demand to defer the national polls and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda assured us that they will consider it whether polls deferment is possible or not.”
Dr Kamal Hossain said these while talking to reporters following nearly a two-hour long meeting between the leaders of the Jatiya Oiktafront delegation and the Election
Commission (EC) at Nirbachan Bhaaban in the city.
The renowned jurist said that the CEC and other commissioners listened to their arguments. “They listened us with patience. The CEC promised us that they will cooperate with us in the polls.”
Dr Kamal focused on the clash between BNP activists and police in front of BNP central office at Nayapalton and said, it has done by government supporters.
About discussions with the CEC, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who is also spokesman of the Jatiya Oikyafront, said, the attitude of the Election Commission and the government will determine whether they will be there in the election race or opt out.
Fakhrul said, “We show our disinterest to the use of EVMs. About Military deployment, the CEC said, Military will remain as a striking force. Besides, in every centre Military deployment is possible or not, they will consider it.”
He further pointed out, “Whether we’ll remain there in the election race depends on the attitude of the Election Commission and the election-time government.”
Fakhrul said, the Prime Minister is using her official residence Ganobhaban for selecting and scrutinizing purpose of party MP aspirants. “It is government house. Does she has authority to use it or not. The CEC replies us that they will look after it,” he added.
The BNP Secretary General said, we focused on the reshuffle and transfer in establishment department as well as mentioned ghost cases.
Fakhrul said, we also discussed about broadcast from polling centres and the CEC said, journalists will have entry pass in the cerntres but they will not be allowed live broadcast.
He said, we also urged for the release of BNP chief Khaleda Zia and said without her a free, fair and acceptable election will not be possible. Replying to a question, the senior BNP leader said the EC and the government have so far failed to demonstrate a positive attitude for ensuring a credible election.
Asked what the EC told them about their election deferment demand, Fakhrul said they demanded the election be delayed by three weeks. “The commission said they will discuss it at their meeting and inform their decision later.”
The meeting that began at 3:30pm continued till 5:30pm
The Jatiya Oikya Front delegation was led by Kamal Hossain.
