People, especially the low income groups, had to suffer as easy bikes and battery run rickshaws went off the streets in Jessore due to imposing ban by Jessore district and police administrations.
The decision came in force from Thursday morning. Earlier, the administration, made announcements in the town conveying its decision.
Dweller in Jessore described the decision as whimsical and illogical. They told Newsmen that it will add new sufferings to the low income groups who are still unable to bear the sky rocking prices of essentials. Students of different educational institutions also endure untold sufferings although few people who have illegal ways to earn money are happy with the decision. This section of people including few journalists very often urges the administration to impose such ban, too.
A retired teacher who does not want to disclose her identity told Newsmen that she had to pay more money to a rickshaw to come to Barobazar from Puratan Kashba as battery run rickshaws and easy bikes were not allowed ply in the town.
Housewife Taslima Begum had to walk two kilometers to come to Jessore town from Chansra on the outskirts of the town due to lack of easy bikes as she was unable to bear the expense of leg paddling rickshaws.
Iqbal Kabir Jahid, polit bureau member of Workers Party of Bangladesh described the decision as torture towards low income people. ‘Such whimsical decision taken by Jessore administration is illogical,’ he added.
Driving of easy bike provided jobs to a large number of unemployed people in Jessore as well as the country. ‘Moreover, easy bikes that were restricted by the administrations were imported from outside the country by paying taxes to the government,’ he added.
While tried to reach over mobile phone, the deputy commissioner did not respond to Newsmen.
Azmal Huda, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station, however, told Newsmen that Jessore district and police administration took the decision to control traffic congestion in the town.
