Economic Reporter :
Eastern Bank Limited (EBL) will fully compensate its clients who became victims of the recent ATM (automated teller machine) cards forgery. Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Wednesday issued a circular in this regard.
According to BB press release, EBL depositors who lost money from their accounts to the recent ATM card scam would be given back the money by EBL on Thursday.
The affected depositors would be given cheques at a programme to be held at the BB’s conference room at 10-30am, with BB Deputy Governor Naznin Sultana, EBL Executive Director and other high officials of the bank attending it.
Last Friday some clients of the EBL reported to the bank authorities about the unidentified transactions from their accounts. Following the allegation, a central bank’s inquiry identified 22 clients whose money was stolen by ATM cards forgery.
The preliminary investigation of the central bank also found that some unscrupulous people including foreign nationals were involved in the skimming racket that stole money from six ATM booths of three private banks.
BB said that the thieves used skimming devices and video cameras to steal information from the bankcards and duplicate those for withdrawing cash. Following the inquest, BB also asked all banks to install anti-skimming devices at all of their ATM booths to check fraudulent activities and ensure security of the depositors’ money.
