Abdul Basit, 48, has become delighted with good yield and lucrative market price of his newly harvested early winter vegetables at present inspiring many others to vegetable farming.
A resident of Puran Gawn village under Dakshin Surma Upazila, Basit has developed himself as a potential vegetable farmer in the District. He has cultivated pumpkin on two bighas of land. “I have been selling pumpkin at Taka 50-60 per piece from my land directly for the last couple of weeks,” he said, adding that the selling price has delighted him very much.
Hundreds and thousands of farmers like Basit, Saiful and Delwar in the area have become happy after attaining good yield and lucrative market price of the early winter, said Shamima Akter, Agriculture Officer of Dakshin Surma Upazila.
Tajul Islam, a farmer of Kamalbazar area of the upazila, said farmers in the upazila had better vegetables yield due to favorable weather conditions. Jamal and Farman, two other vegetable growers, agreed. They said they are getting a fair price for their produces this season.
D. Mahmudul Islam Nazrul, Senior Scientist of BARI Sylhet, said the government has taken digital methods to the farmers doorstep to build a modern farming management system.
Farmers are also being provided with incentives, free fertilizers, seeds, agricultural loans on easy terms, he noted.
