Winter vegetables have started arriving in the markets much earlier but it is being sold at higher prices and bean cauliflower, cabbage and spinach ,are already available in the market.
Farmers have cultivated hybrid tomatoes in large quantity in char lands in Sariakandi and Dhunot Upazila, Department if Agricultural Extension officials informed.
DAE source said, 12700 hectares of land have been brought under vegetables cultivation in the district this year with a target to produce around 1.5 lake tones.
Farmers have cultivated cabbage and cauliflowers on 7500 hectares of land they have already harvested cauliflowers from 250 hectares and cabbages from 480 hectares.
Over 5000 peoples 200 villages are involved in cultivating and selling winter vegetables in the district.
Arif Rahman a farmer of Fulbare village in Shariakande upazila said he cultivated cabbages on three bights of land and spent about Tk 60,000 on seeding fertilizer irrigation and land rent. The hole sale market price of cabbages is between Tk.20 and Tk.25 per price. so he can make a profit of Tk.15.000 to tk.20.00 for farming on three bighas of land.
Md abdus Sattar another farmer of Mahastangar village in Shibgang upazila said he spent about Tk. 750 on cultivating cauliflower on the decimal of land and harvested 1.5 to 2 mounds of vegetables .
The wholesale market price of cauliflower ranges between Tk 1.800 and Tk 2000 per mound and farmers can makes Tk 1250 to 1300 profit from a decimal of land. Large quantities of vegetables are being transported to Dhaka Chitagonge and major cities from Bogra district .
Some 8 to 10 tracks loaded with vegetables leave for the capitals and other cities from Mahastangare vegetables market every day.
Chandi Das Kunda deputi director of DAE Bogra said Shariakandy Sonatola, Sherpur,Sajahanpur,Gabtali,and Dhunot upazilas are famous for producing winter vegetables where yields are nuch higher. Bean is selling is Tk 120 a kg tomato is Tk 100 radish at Tk 40 and spinach at Tk 60 kg.
