Early rain damages Boro paddy worth Tk 5892m in Sylhet Divn

Boro paddy worth Tk 5892 million was damaged in Sylhet Division by the early and excessive rains and hailstorms coupled with rolling down of water from the upstream region during the last one month.
The production loss has so far been estimated to be about 190,086 tonnes of rice in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj districts.
Additional Director of DAE, Sylhet division Krishna Chandra Hore told this correspondent common and large numbers of poor and marginal farmers as well as the solvent ones are badly hit with the damage, adding, the number of affected farmers would be at least 152,327.
As the excess rains was much ahead of the season it was almost unprecedented, the senior official said adding, most of the farmers were compelled to harvest even half ripen stage of the Boro paddy. However, so far over 60 per cent crop has already been harvested.
In terms of total damage, crops in at least 10,000 hectares of land had already been lost due to the inundation by the gushing and stagnant waters coupled with early rains in Sylhet, 700 hectares in Moulvibazar, 2,000 hectares in Habiganj and 37436 hectraes in Sunamaganj.
But, the unofficial estimate of crop damage would be higher.
Senior officials from the Agriculture Ministry and the DAE headquarters visited the affected areas of the districts two weeks ago.
On 22 April, Sylhet divisonal Disaster Management Committee at its emergency meeting with the divisional Commissioner Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed in the chair also discussed the allegations against the WDB irregularities in the repair of crop protection embankments in Sunamganj.
Different organisations in Sylhet and Sunamganj also demanded punishment for the concerned officials of the WDB for the irregularities in dam reconstruction.
WDB had spent Tk 320 million in Sunamganj district only this year.
