E-commerce policy needs to boost country’s business network

The size of Bangladesh’s e-grocery market is of around $4-5 million or of about 0.03 percent of the country’s overall grocery market though the analysts are predicting that Bangladesh’s e-commerce market will surge to $20 billion by the year 2020 according to the Goldman Sachs, said Kamrul Islam, FCA, Senior Vice-President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI). He made this comment at the inauguration of a 2-day “E-Commerce Promotional Expo” organized by Platinum Events and presented by Daraz.com held on Friday at Gulshan’sKhazana Gardenia Grand Hall as chief guest.
Secretary General of Association of Mobile Telephone Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) TIM NurulKabir was present as special guest.
 Kamrul Islam said with more than 85.5 million internet users and about 150 million mobile users, the e-commerce sector has a huge client base here in Bangladesh. E-commerce business in Bangladesh is day by day flourishing, but it needs a platform and for a suitable platform we need adequate digital infrastructure. Besides, to compete in the international market we need product listings which daraz.com will help to formulate, he informed. Bangladesh’s e-commerce sector is expected to grow 70 percent in 2017 and the market was of about 1000 crore taka in 2017growing from $65-70 million in 2016, he said. E-commerce market size is still is a mere 0.7 percent of the country’s total retail market. Contribution of e-commerce to our GDP is less than 1 percent and there are around 1,000 e-commerce entrepreneurs in the country, Furthermore, this market witnessed around 20 percent growth in a year. Currently this sector employs 50,000 people but it has a potential to provide employment opportunities to 1,00,000 people, said Kamrul Islam. He also cited a statistical data that 80 percent of the online users use the internet to make online purchase and 50 percent of the online users use online to purchase products more than once.
CEO of Platinum Events Junayet H. Khan in his welcome address said that the main focus of this e-commerce promotional expo is to promote the local businesses which are based on e-commerce and make their presence in the international market.
He said the scope of expansion of e-commerce in Bangladesh is truly huge but to take proper advantage of this opportunity various infrastructural and systematic improvement must take place including quality assurance and policy guidelines.

Our 60% population are young and with this demographic dividend our e-commerce business will surely see a boost in recent future, he said.
