The e-commerce business has been expanding in Bangladesh rapidly and its volume will cross US$ 2000 crore by 2020 as the government is providing policy support and enhance facilities in this regard, analysts said.
As a result, many local and global entrepreneurs have joined the e-commerce business here in the country during the last few years. Recently, it gets a momentum as foreign entrepreneurs as well as foreign organisations are negotiating for big volume investment in the e-commerce sector.
According to the analysts, an India-based research and consultancy organisation Redseer has recently said the country’s e-commerce sector will grow up to 70 per cent this year and will exceed $11 crore by the year end.
By 2020, the e-commerce sector of Bangladesh will be worth $2000 core, said the research organization.
Redseer’s analysis shows that the current market of e-commerce is still only 7.2 percent of the country’s retail market while e-grocery market is $40-50 lakh, which is 3 per cent of consumer goods market.
Started in 2009, Redseer Management Consulting mainly focuses on several sectors, including automobiles, construction, healthcare, consumer goods, retail marketing, e-commerce, telecommunications and technology.
Redseer has identified three helpful indicators for the spread of e-commerce in Bangladesh. These are: a large population, densely populated area and rapidly growing economy.
 In the last few years, due to the global popularity, Bangladesh became one of the e-commerce service organisations. Along with local entrepreneurs, foreign companies also came forward to invest in e-commerce companies here.

According to the type of product and service, the e-commerce sector companies in the country are divided into roughly six categories. These are: online retail store, food delivery store, grocery store, e-ticket, online car market and online real estate market.
According to the E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (E-CAB) data, currently the number of members of the organisation is 625. In addition to the website, Facebook has introduced services through F-Commerce, organisers. The number of such initiative is more than eight thousand.
Although there are small and large organisations in the e-commerce sector, most of them could not gain the confidence of the customers. There is no diversity of products, and their quality is not good either. Entrepreneurs are also lacking in professionalism. There are questions about the effectiveness of the traditional business model, analysts said.
E-commerce companies in the country mainly follow two types of business models. One is B to B (Business to Business) and the other is B to C (Business to Consumer). In the B to T model, one company deals with other organisations. And in the B to C model the company is directly dealing with the consumers.
The concerned people said, there are several important areas for consumers to gain confidence in the e-commerce based marketing system. These are: ensuring the real value of the product or services, reaching the consumer or the convenience of the customer, ensuring customer service, simplifying process, diversity and paying maximum value.
E-Cab’s current and founder President Rajib Ahmed said that the business of this sector has been expanding in a big way. Long-term investment needed in this sector. E-commerce is not for those who want to be established in a short time.
