Dyke collapse floods six villages in Dumuria UZ

The sudden embank collapse on Thursday evening on the river ‘Bhadra’ at No 29 polder of Chandgar area in Dumuria Upazila under the district has affected at least 2000 houses.
Over 5000 families have marooned and hundreds of acres of paddy field and around 300 shrimp enclosures washed away, said local public representatives.
Several families have taken shelter in other villages as their houses went under water. Sharafpur UP chairman Sheikh Robiul Islam Robi said, Villages in Sharafpur unions were flooded. If the repair work is not done within a short span of time, the flood water is likely to reach Dumuria upazila.
At least six villages under the same upazila have been flooded, said Robiul.
The six villages are Chandgar, Buttibirala, Baroaria, Shomvunagar, Akra and Sundarmahal.
The homeless Hemayet Rashid Khan, Jahangir Hossain Sarder, Abdus Salam Morol, Abul Kalam Sheikh and Shahidul Sheikh have taken shelter over Wapda embankment.
Promila Rani, Provati Mondal and Joya Roy of Chandgar village said, “suddenly the embankment collapsed and most of our croplands, fish enclosures, cattle and poultry and other valuables washed away, we are living inhuman lives without getting food and other necessaries.”
Devaprotim Halder, Sub-divisional Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) said, “We have heard the news of embankment collapse, but due to fund crisis renovation work would not be possible.”
Rafiqul Islam, AC land said, “Upazila Nirbahi Officer was informed the matter, but he is now staying at Dhaka for office work purposes.”
Dumuria upazila chairman Khan Ali Monsur said, “I have heard the news of embankment collapse, but in order to renovate this embankment , government fund is urgent.”
