DWASA to receive $100m from EIB

The government on Monday signed a $100 million deal with the European Investment Bank (EIB) aiming to implement the ‘Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project’ at Gandharbpur Water Treatment Plant.
EIB Head of Operation in Asia Ren Tao and additional secretary of the Economic Relations Division Abul Mansur Md. Faiz Ullah signed the agreement on behalf of their respective side at ERD.
The EIB as the co-financer with ADB will provide $100 million for the project to produce 50 crore litre water per day from the Meghna River, said a Dhaka WASA press release.
Later, in the day, Ren Tao and managing director of Dhaka WASA Engr Taqsem A Khan also signed a project assistance agreement to set up environmental-friendly water management in Dhaka WASA.
To develop the surface water capacity to meet 70 percent water demand of the capital by 2021, Dhaka WASA is bringing water from Meghna. Dhaka WASA has also an objective to stop groundwater table depletion to maintain an environment-friendly water management system for Dhaka city.
