DWASA signs $250m project deal with ADB

 ADB will provide 250 million US$ for developing an environmentally sustainable water supply system project which will produce 50 crore litre water per day from the river Meghna from its ‘Bishnandi’ point of Araihajar Upazila of Narayanganj.
A loan agreement to this effect was signed between ADB’s Country Director Kazuhiko Higuchi and Mohammad Mejbahuddin, Secretary of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) on 24 April, 2014, says a press release.
Later, a project agreement was signed by ADB Country Director Kazuhiko Higuchi and Engr Taqsem A Khan, Managing Director of Dhaka WASA in presence of Mohammad Mejbahuddin, Secretary of ERD.
Dhaka WASA is bringing water from Meghna to develop the surface water capacity to meet 70percent of total demand by 2021.
DWASA has also an objective to stop the ground water table depletion to maintain an environment-friendly water management system.
The part of the assistance will also be used in a water treatment plant at Gandharpur which will treat 50 crore litres of water per day.  
It may be mentioned that ‘Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project’ is targeted to be implemented by December, 2019 with a total cost of $674.9 million.
Of the amount, ADB will provide $100million from French Agency for Development, $100million by European Investment Bank, while 225 million US$ will provide by Bangladesh Government.
