Dhaka WASA handovers a total of 304 legal water points to Mohakhali Sattola slum dwellers at a ceremony held on Monday.
Charlie Hrachya Sargsyan, Head of Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH) of UNICEF in Bangladesh and Engr Taqsem A Khan, Managing Director of Dhaka WASA attended the ceremony as chief guest and special guest and handed over the water points.
Dr Dibalok Singha, Executive Director of Dushtha Shasthya Kendra (DSK), presided and SMA Rashid, Executive Director, NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation, Governing Body Chairman of IPH School & College AKM Jasimuddin, local Ward Councilor Md Nasir, Sattola Slum community representative Selina Ali and representatives of Nagar Seba, Bangladesh Association for Social Advancement (BASA) and Nagar Daridra Bastibasir Unnayan Sangstha (NDBUS) were present on the occasion.
Charlie Hrachya Sargsyan in his speech expressed his pleasure for bringing the whole Sattola slum dwellers under legal water service.
Engr Taqsem A Khan said, DWASA is committed to provide legal water connection to all the slums of Dhaka city by December, 2015, with the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Dhaka WASA had made tremendous progress in water production. Now DWASA has the capacity of producing surplus water against its daily demand, which is a milestone for DWASA. He also said, under the `Turn Around Dhaka WASA Program’ Dhaka WASA is moving towards an environment-friendly, sustainable and pro-people water supply system for the betterment of the city dwellers.
It may be noted, Dhaka WASA has received Water Leaders Award-2013 at the Global Water Summit held in Seville, Spain on 2013 for its success in providing legal water to Low Income Community (LIC). The prize amount of $11, 000 had been spent in this slum for providing legal water to the LIC People of Sattola Slum.
Dhaka WASA Chief Engineer Md Abul Kashem, Commercial Manager Uttam Kumar Roy FCMA and representatives of the NGOs were present.
