UNB, Dhaka :
Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Lilianne Ploumen arrives here on Wednesday on a two-day visit to discuss cooperation on readymade garment industry for sustainable
sourcing and growth. The main focus of her visit will be to a conference on Sustainable Sourcing in the Garment Sector (SSGS) to be held in the city on Thursday, said an official. Commerce Minsiter Tofail Ahmed and Dutch Minister Ploumen will open the conference at a city hotel.
A combination of buyers, producers and independent experts will present practical solutions and new models for collaboration and costing at the conference.
The conference will mark the start of a multi-stakeholder approach towards improved social and environmental standards in the global textile sector.
Together with the private sector, associations such as the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and knowledge institutes in the Netherlands as well as the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Netherlands wants to support the industry to grow in a responsible manner, said an official at the Netherlands Embassy in Dhaka. The garment sector is the backbone of Bangladesh’ exports, representing close to 80 percent of the overall export earnings. The conference will be organised in partnership with the International Apparel Federation (IAF) and the BGMEA and it will show that sustainable sourcing makes sense and is good business for buyers and suppliers alike.
Minister Ploumen will focus on the ‘Leave No One Behind Agenda’, the need to put all efforts on reaching the poorest groups in the fight against poverty, starting now.
She will visit several projects that focus amongst others on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), including a visit to the IMAGE project: initiatives for married adolescent girls’ empowerment.
