Solidaridad, one of the largest sustainability organisations in the world, launched Phase-2 of ‘Sustainable Agriculture, Food Security and Linkages’ (SaFaL) project, after successful completion of Phase-I, says a press release.
About 1,020 producer group platforms in aquaculture, dairy and horticulture as well as a wide number of local level service providers in the form of lead farmers, community nutrition volunteers and community livestock service providers took part in the programme with the support of Dutch Embassy.
The project supported 58,000 farming households to produce nutrition rich food, who are engaged in self-driven initiatives to increase their farm productivity.
Phase-2, to be implemented throughout 2017 to 2020, will focus on enhancing commercial agriculture, rural employment and skills development of farmers and workers to adopt sustainable practices in production and marketing of safe and sustainable food, benefitting 100,000 farming households.
Along with aquaculture, dairy and horticulture, soybean will be introduced as a new commodity supporting 25,000 families in Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts.
SaFaL learning sharing and launching of 2nd phase was organized at Krishibid Institute (KIB) Convention Hall, Khamarbari, Farmagte in the city with the participation of, among others, representatives from public and private sectors, Solidadridad’s development partners, supply and value chain actors, journalists and civil society activists.

Dr. Shatadru Chattopadhayay, Managing Director, Solidaridad South and Southeast Asia chaired the programme. He said, “SaFaL programme takes an integrated market-based approach for improving food security in the delta regions of Bangladesh.
Mr Selim Reza Hasan, Country Manager, Solidaridad Bangladesh mentioned that, it is developing robust farmer and business support structures through a multi-stakeholder approach for the adoption of good practices, market and finance including policy influencing activities towards framing a national plan of actions for increasing productivity in a sustainable manner.
