The Netherlands ambassador’s purse has been stolen at Dhaka University where she was attending a programme.
Leoni Margaretha Cuelenaere went to the Arts Faculty premises on Monday to inaugurate a photography exhibition. Police said they have spotted the thief from video footage.
“It was a young man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed. We are trying to recover the purse,” said Shahbagh police OC Abu Bakar Siddique.
The envoy was the chief guest at the launch of the exhibition on the occasion of fourth anniversary of photography institute ‘Counter Foto.’
Arts Faculty Dean Nisar Hossain said the ambassador’s mobile phone, notepad and some important documents were in the purse. Footage shot by TV crew shows that the young man fled with the purse as soon as Ambassador Cuelenaere left her seat to light a candle as part of the programme.
“She left the purse on the chair when it was stolen…the thief has been seen in footages shot by several TV channel crew,” said Dean Hossain.
