Bangladesh Ambassador to the Netherlands Sheikh Mohammed Belal has laid emphasis on strengthening cooperation between the two deltaic countries – Bangladesh and the Netherlands and sharing knowledge on living in the deltas.
Ambassador Belal urged the Dutch experts to come forward with innovative ideas and suggestions for implementation of the document signed between Bangladesh and the Netherlands for land reclamation and accretion in Bangladesh.
He was speaking at a knowledge sharing seminar organised by the collaborative programme of Wageningen University and Research (WUR) of the Netherlands and the Institute of Water and Flood Management of BUET in cooperation with the Embassy of Bangladesh in The Hague, said a press release on Thursday.
Representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Infrastructure and the Environment of the Netherlands, academics from the leading universities of the country, and other knowledge institutes were present.
The seminar brought forward in depth research based knowledge on how Bangladesh and the Netherlands could collaborate to make Bangladesh as safe and secure delta as the Netherlands is.
The Ambassador elaborated on the existing level of cooperation between the two countries including formulation of Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 with the Dutch technical assistance.
He expressed the hope that such meeting would generate new knowledge and consolidate our existing knowledge in managing deltas, which is critical for the very livelihood of the people living in the deltas.
Highlighting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s role as member of the United Nation’s High Level Panel on Water and her call for due implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ambassador Belal urged all to synchronize their works and thinking with the SDGs.
The Director of Project Office Wageningen University and Research, Dhaka, Catharien Terwisscha van Scheltinga explained the context as well as the long history of cooperation between Bangladesh and the Netherlands on water management.
Team Leader for the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 Dr Jaap de Heer highlighted the latest developments of Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 including its strategies and challenges, proposed institutional structure and funding mechanism for the implementation of the Plan.
Referring the forthcoming intergovernmental review of Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 and on-going discussion with the World Bank and other development partners for arranging funding mechanism for implementation of the plan, Dr. Jaap indicated towards yet another lists of development projects that will make Bangladesh much more secure and resilient in the days to come.
Dr. Jeroen Warner, Associate Professor Disaster Studies and Water Management at Wageningen University and Research, and Farhana Ahmed, a Bangladeshi PhD candidate in the research project presented results and outcomes of the project including knowledge exchange between Bangladesh and the Netherlands on flood risk management.
