There are several tea gardens in the suburbs of Sylhet. The city is almost like a green-wrapped eco-park. In fact, the city of Sylhet is surrounded by green nature. But sadly, the city of Sylhet has turned gray because of the dust spreading with the damaged roads repairing and the transfer of electricity under the ground. Moreover, there are huge holes in major roads in the town.
While visiting different areas of the city, it was seen that heavy layers of dust have fallen on the trees inside the city. Dust has accumulated on the leaves of the green trees on the side of the road. The same is true of the shops and buildings along the roads. Residents of the city and tourists visiting Sylhet have suffered due to the increasing dust problem. Doctors also commented that dust is harmful to health and there is a risk of various diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. City residents say most people in the city use CNG-powered vehicles, rickshaws or motorcycles and private cars. The dust falls directly on the body and face and people have to suffer. In this situation, they commented that such misery will increase in the dry season ahead. Recently, it has been observed that dust reigns on almost every road inside the city of Sylhet. In Ambarkhana of the city, Shahi Eidgah, Kumarpara, Baluchar, Pathantola, Medina Market, Mirzajangal, Lama Bazar, Nairopool, Mirabazar, Shibganj, Tilagarh, Sobhanighat, Shahjalal sub-city, are heavily sufferers.
Among these areas, power supply project is ongoing at Amberkhana-Shahi Eidgah, Nayorpool-Tilagarh road, Lamabazar-Zindabazar road side. Soil has been placed on the side of the road. As a result, these amounts of dust increases while vehicles are plying on the road. Some vehicles are falling into the hole.
Kamal Ahmed, a businessman from Shibganj area of the city, said that he has been doing business there for about five years. For a year now, they have been suffering due to dust on the broken roads. Due to the dust, the number of buyers in the business has decreased. To reduce dust, he sprinkled water on the road several times every day on his own initiative. But it is not working. Tareq Hossain, a motorcyclist in the Amberkhana area of the city, said the situation was similar across the city. Wearing a helmet is not giving much protection. The dust of the road has to be exhausted on the body and clothes.
Sylhet Deputy Civil Surgeon Janmejoy Dutt said that there is a risk of getting infected with various diseases of the lungs and respiratory system by entering the dustbin. In addition, those who have allergies and asthma, they also have problems. People are getting used to using masks because of corona. Masks should be used all the time to protect the body from dust.
Nur Azizur Rahman, Chief Engineer of Sylhet City Corporation, said that dust has increased in the city recently. Apart from this, dust is being created due to various development works including drains. They will take measures to sprinkle water on the roads on behalf of the city corporation.
