Our Netrakona Correspondent :The flood water in the district’s Durgapur upazila started receding on Wednesday from the affected areas. The situation, however, remained unchanged in the bordering upazila of Kalmakanda.According to reports, the flood, which was caused by widespread rainfall for five consecutive days and on rush of hilly water from the Garo hills in India, extensively damaged standing crops and properties including several thousands of kutcha dwelling houses. Meanwhile, many homeless people have taken shelters on different places and road-cum- embankments under the open sky. They were facing scarcity of pure drinking water. Emergency relief operation was geared up in the flood-hit areas by the district and the local administration to meet the crises of pure drinking water and medicines. The members of Army and BGB continued working with the official relief teams in the flood-hit areas in response to Deputy Commissioner DR Tarun Kanti Sikder’s call for help in conducting relief operations, officials said. The relief teams already distributed 96 metric tonnes of rice and adequate quantity of dry foods among the flood-victims in Durgapur and Kalmakanda upazilas on Wednesday, they added. Local MP Chhabi Biswash visited the flood-hit areas under Durgapur and Kalmakanda upazilas and distributed relief materials among the flood-victims there.
