Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the Hindus in Bangladesh, has come to an end with the symbolic immersion of mirrors (Darpan Bisarjan) in temples and marquees.
However, though ritually the puja ended on Thursday, the festivity will formally culminate on Friday with immersion of the idols of Goddess Durga and her progeny.
According to the almanac, this year both Maha Nabami and Bijoya Dashami fell on the same day. So ritually festival ended a day earlier than the usual four days.
Immersion will take place on Friday afternoon. It will mark the symbolic return of the goddess
to Mount Kailash, the heavenly abode of her consort Lord Shiva, after her annual sojourn on earth.
Even after end of puja rituals on Thursday, devotees continued to throng pandals throughout the day.
Head priest of Dhakeshwari National Temple Ranjit Chakraborty said they had prayed to the goddess for the wellbeing of all, irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
Devotees were also seen offering their ‘final prayers’ at temples and marquees in the morning.
Another priest of the national temple, Narayan Chakraborty, said immersion procession will start from Dhakeshwari at 3pm on Friday. Immersion would take place at Wise Ghat in Old Dhaka, he said.
After the immersion, “peace water” would be brought to the respective temples and marquees to sprinkle over the devotees in the evening.
General Secretary of Mohanagar Sarbojonin Puja Committee Narayan Saha said Durga Puja was peacefully celebrated in 225 pandals across the capital amid tight security.
