Guangzhou Evergrande said Elkeson’s penalty miss cost them a place in the AFC Champions League semi-finals after they were ousted by Australian debutants Western Sydney Wanderers.
Assistant coach Massimiliano Maddaloni pinpointed the Brazilian forward’s first-half spot-kick as the key moment as the Chinese champions went out on away goals.
“We had so many opportunities and what if we scored from the penalty? It would have been another story but unfortunately, we missed it,” Maddaloni said.
Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic dived the right way to save from the prolific Elkeson, who finally hit the net in injury-time to finish the competition with seven goals.
