Dilapidated condition of most of the roads in the capital is creating enormous sufferings to everyday life of the dwellers.
Roads in both the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas are in very bad shape with potholes and broken surface that are submerged even in moderate rainwater adding risks to traffic movement and to accidents.
There are risky ditches in roads in different areas, particularly in Jurain, Dayaganj, Sayedabad, Jatrabari and Gulistan in DSCC area.
Of those, the roads in Jurain area have created untold suffering to both vehicles and pedestrians. The roads are found with full of mud and muddy water most of the time during the rainy season. “Huge numbers of vehicles run through Jurain road towards Mawa ghat as the road is
linked to the south and the west part of the country. Drivers and passengers suffer every day due to the dilapidated condition of the road,” said Hashem Sikdar, a Barishal bound bus driver from Jurain.
A number of pedestrians use Jurain-Postogola road every day. In rainy days, the pedestrians suffer most while using the area around Jurain rail crossing.
“When there is no rain the mud turns into dust and create hazardous condition for the commuters and padestrians,” said Anwar Uddin from the nearby Postogola area.
Similar experiences were expressed by other city dwellers from Jatrabari, Sayedabad, Lalbagh, Mitford Road, Gulistan to Sadarghat road, Mugda, Malibagh, Khilgaon, Mirpur, Kalshi Road, Asadgate, Shyamoli, Rampura, Sipahibagh and Uttara areas.
When contacted, Khan Mohammad Belal, the Chief Executive Officer of DSCC, told The New Nation on Thursday, “The city corporation is trying to keep all of its roads workable. We are involved in development work all the time.”
On the other hand, Kudratullah, the Additional Chief Engineer of DNCC told The New Nation on Thursday, “We have finished most of the development works of the main roads of our jurisdiction. There are very few roads in DNCC you find in bad condition.”
He said, “The road in front of Malibagh Abul Hotel to South Point School is a little bid dilapidated. Some areas of Mirpur are also in the same condition.”
He, however, acknowledged some lanes are in dilapidated condition.
He said the repair work of the dilapidated roads would start soon after the rainy season.
Bulban Ahmed, a private service holder from Motijheel, said Titas Road up to Sipahibagh is in a very bad shape.
Besides, he said, roads from Khilgaon to Malibagh Abul Hotel area are also in a rundown condition and full of ditches.
“In rainy days, the roads are found full of muddy water and vehicles run with risks on those roads. The drivers complaint they hardly find the roads in good shape. They frequently fall in ditches and accidents take place,” said Ariful Haque in Khilgaon area.
The roads from Asad gate to Shyamoli, and Dhanmondi-15 to Kalabagan and Rapa Plaza are also in bad condition.
“Every day I use the road from Dhanmondi-15 to Kalabagan and Rapa plaza with my bike. I have been suffering badly while running my bike on that route. Rainy days increases the sufferings manifold,” said Babul Hossain, an NGO employee of the area.
He urged the authorities concerned to repair those roads as soon as possible.
Apart from these, some other small roads, lanes and by-lanes are in worst shape in most of the areas in the city, the residents and transport workers alleged.
The ongoing development work of Dhaka Metro Rail Project from Uttara to Motijheel has added more sufferings as it has narrowed the roads for transports to use.
