Sanitary Napkin Vending Machines for the female students of Dhaka University have been installed at several points on the campus. Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU) and ACI jointly implemented it, titled “Freedom Hygiene Corner”.
Education Minister Dipu Moni inaugurated the programme as the chief guest on the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) premises on Wednesday.
DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Nasreen Ahmed, Business Faculty Dean Professor Shibli Rubayetul Islam, Managing Director of ACI Consumer Brands Syed Alamgir and popular film actress Arifa Parveen Zaman Moushumi were present as special guests.
Congratulating the DUCSU, the Education Minister said, once upon a time it was taboo to talk in public place about sanitary napkin. DUCSU had launched a social movement against the taboo from this initiative.
All high schools, colleges and universities in the country should launch this service and raise public awareness, she added. DUCSU Member Tilottoma Sikder and Farida Parvin conducted the function, while DUCSU General Secretary Golam Rabbani, Assistant General Secretary Saddam Hossain, Bangladesh Chhatra League acting President Al Nahian Khan Joy and acting General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharja spoke among others.
Tilottama Sikder, who is the main catalyst for the initiative told the New Nation that the vending machines were installed at 10 points for the female students of the university. The spots are TSC, Arts Building, Faculty of Business Studies, Science Library, Fine Arts Faculty, Ruqayyah Hall, Shamsunnahar Hall, Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall.
Students can collect sanitary napkins at any time from the vending machines paying Tk 10. Students will get the service at Tk 10 even if the price increases, told Tilottoma.
