“After destroying our haor Boro crops last year, I was passing hard days with my family.
That time begging was only source to run my six members family including sick husband , says Minara Begum, 46, from Birnagor village in Sunamganj’s Tahirpur upazila under Shonir Haor.
She said, I was anxious for saving my family. All time I was planning but didn’t establish for financial crisis. After few days, I took Tk2000 loan and first time bought seven ducks including food for supporting my family.
“Now I have 70 ducks. I also employed one female worker here,” said Minara when this correspondent visited her area recently. “Now I am very happy to be self-reliant. I have planned to extend my farming widely, said Minara.
While this correspondent visited the village then found women are busy to feeding ducks. Huge of families are engaged to arrange ducks eggs trade, earning enough for living a moderate life in the Haor area.
Shukria Begum, 18, a resident of same village who had to stop study after Class 10 due to poverty, last year. She told this correspondent, at first I seen Minara farming. Then I bought four ducks nine months ago. Now I am earning money. I still struggle to run the family as this income. But now My family is more better earlier.
Mahmuda Begum, 34, a housewife of the Sreepur village area said she earns Tk 150 to 200 daily and it serves as a contribution to her poor family.
She said, I took short training course from my husband. After my husband helps I set up a duck farm adjacent to my home. With the added income from the ducks, my dream to help support family has come true.
Muhibur Rahman, husband of Mahmuda said, my wife attention is very well in the duck farming. I will expand this farm as my wife interest.
Mahmuda told this correspondent, “I am not alone; the people of some neighbour seven villages are do this. If we do not duck farming, we died for crisis of food.” Duck farming, serves as the means of livelihood for many families in Tahirpur Upazila under the Sunamganj district.
Popy Begum, 38, a housewife of Baradal village said she has been involved in duck farming for few years and now maintains his six-member family including three daughters with the earning from the trade eggs and ducks after destroying my husband boro paddy in 2014.
“Earlier I was a house maid but now I selling ducks eggs involving labourers. The children were also helping me in the farm, she said.
Md. Kamruzzaman, Upazila Chairman of Tahirpur Upazila Parishad told this correspondent haor victims of different villages are going different areas for searching work. But this some village’s people weren’t going outside. They have survived by duck farming.
He said, it could develop as a more popular if involving huge of families, especially women.
Bindu Talukder, Member-Secretary of Haor Bachao Sunamganj Bachao Andolon told this correspondent it is good side for livelihood with duck farming in Haor people. If this concept spreads every area in Haor, then Haor people become benefited.
