Xinhua, Dubai :
Dubai has given green light to expand the Dubai metro’s red line to connect it to Expo 2020 site in the emirate, Dubai roads and transport authority (RTA) said Saturday.
The “Route 2020” project encompasses the extension of the red line of the Dubai Metro from the Nakheel Harbour and Tower Metro Station to the site of Expo 2020 which is located not far from Dubai’s new airport Al Maktoum.
The extended sector of the metro line will stretch over 15 km and includes seven stations. The expansion will increase the red line’s length from 51.1 kilometers to 66.1 kilometers.
As the first Arab city ever, Dubai will host the world expo in 2020 under the theme “connecting minds, creating the future.”
RTA chairman Mattar Al-Tayer said the Route 2020 project will offer “a safe and smooth mobility” to visitors of Expo 2020 and residents of the neighbourhood as well.
Al-Tayer added the project “stands out as a vital transit corridor linking various Dubai districts with Al Maktoum International Airport, an icon of a new important development phase in the history of Dubai, and a symbol of sustainability, advancement and creativity for current and future generations.”
The RTA also plans more tracks such as a blue line, yellow line and purple line in order to increase the public transport network.
