DU to pass Tk 922.48 cr budget with only 1.63 percent for research

The Dhaka University is going to sanction a total of Tk922.48 crore, the biggest proposed budget in the history of DU, for 2022-23 fiscal year but the budget for research purposes is only 1.63 percent.
The university has celebrated its hundreds centenary with a low rankings in the World and it has also taken some programme to improve basic and fundamental research, but the newest budget for research is still in a black picture.
Like previous years, research get low priority yet again. A major portion of the budget, 72.94 percent would be spent for salaries, allowances, and pensions for the teachers and employees. Only Tk15.05 crore or 1.63 percent is allocated this year for research purposes.
The proposed budget was approved on Sunday in a Syndicate meeting. The budget will be placed for approval during the annual Senate session chaired by Vice-Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman at the Sir Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban. A total of Tk922.48 crore budget of which, University Grants Commission (UGC) will donate Tk781.94 crore (84.76%), some Tk83 crore (9.00%) will be met from the university’s own fund and the rest Tk57.54 crore (6.24%) is in the deficit budget.
According to the proposed budget book, the sector-wise budget details of the university, 29.69% of the budget is allocated for salary, 23.74% for allowances, 19.51% for supply and service expense, 19.51% for pension and retirement favour, 2.38% for capital grant, and 3.64% for other grants.
The revised budget for 2021-22 fiscal year was 860.68 crore, Tk774.28 crore in 2020-21, Tk810.42 crore in 2019-20 and Tk741.13 crore in 2018-19.
