The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University (DU) on Monday announced that the university will observe ‘7 March Day’ every year with due respect marking the historic 7th March speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. “Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March speech not only inspired the nation but will also motivate the deprived and neglected people throughout the world to establish their rights and justice…So, DU will observe the day every year with honour,” he said.
VC Dr Akhtaruzzaman came up with the announcement at a programme on “Historic speech of 7th March: Importance and Significance” at DU. The authority arranged the discussion at the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) auditorium on the campus marking the inclusion of the speech in the Memory of the World International Register, a list of the world’s important documentary heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
This recognition has taken the country’s status to a new stature in the global context.
Akhtaruzzaman said Bangabandhu’s 18-minute-long speech was a spontaneous and unwritten where he staged his protests against the repression and exploitations of the Pakistani rulers.
“Bangabandhu gave this speech during a very critical situation. There is no second such speech in the history of the world,” he added. Urging the students to hold the spirit of the historic speech, Akhtaruzzaman said the speech must be included in the textbooks.
