bdnews24.com :Students of Dhaka University have been protesting against the recent incident of a police sub-inspector’s alleged blackmailing of a Bangladesh Bank official. The victim, Golam Rabbi, now an officer with Bangladesh Bank’s Communications Department, is also a former student of DU and former news presenter at Somoy TV.He has accused Mohammadpur police SI Masud Sikder of threatening him near Geneva Camp on Jan 10 with prosecution as a Yaba addict if he did not pay up the money demanded from him.In the light of reports appearing in the media over the incident, the accused policeman was taken off duty. Police are currently investigating the matter. The DU students formed a human chain at the university’s Raju Memorial Sculpture on Tuesday, demanding SI Masud’s dismissal from service. According to Rabbi, around 11:30pm on Sunday, he was stopped by police in the Mohammadpur area and first subjected to a body search. Then he was asked to pay them a hefty amount of money or face prosecution as a Yaba dealer and addict.Rabbi said he was returning from a relative’s home when he was accosted by the police.”Even when I told them I work for Bangladesh Bank, SI Masud abused me in foul language,” Rabbi said. However, SI Masud Shikdar told bdnews24.com that Rabbi had not been dragged to the police station in view of his social position as an official of Bangladesh Bank.”We detained him because he failed to explain what he was doing in that area so late at night.” Shikdar said.He said Rabbi resisted the usual body search police would put anyone through if he or she evoked suspicion.”He (Rabbi) also made many adverse comments about the police. We let him go after discussing the matter with the OC,” Shikdar claimed.
