DU Correspondent :
The students of Home Economics College continued their barrier programme at Nilkhet intersection in the city for the sixth consecutive day on Thursday demanding elevation of their college to a fully-fledged institute under Dhaka University.
Several hundred female students around 11:00am blocked the crossing on the Mirpur Road, a major thoroughfare in the city, causing a severe traffic gridlock, witnesses said.
They were continuing their demonstration blocking the roads till 3:00pm. The traffic in and around
the area halted, causing immense sufferings to city people.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Education Nurul Islam Nahid at the secretariat brushed away any instant possibility of elevation of Home Economics College to an institute under DU.
In a press conference on Thursday morning he said the matter is under consideration, but instantly it is not possible to accept their (protesting students) demand.
After the refusal of the Minister, student leader Ishrat Jahan said, ‘The Minister’s statement is unexpected. He assured us six months ago to meet our demand, but there is no progress.
Ishrat, student of Child Development and Social Relation Department of the college, said they would continue their movement until their demands were met.
Meanwhile, a group of Dhaka University students formed a human chain in front of the VC House around 11:00am and later paraded the campus protesting against the ‘illogical movement’ of the students of Home Economics College.
They also handed over a memorandum to DU VC containing a five-point charter of demands which bar using of DU logo and name by affiliated institutions, separate convocation for DU students, bar on affiliate bodies to use DU logo and monogram on certificates, separate policy for affiliated institutions.
DU VC Professor AAMS Arefine Siddique told The New Nation, the students submitted a memorandum to me. We will consider their demand with the rules of university.
About Home Economics students’ agitation, the VC said, before government decision we cannot say anything.
