A group of Dhaka University (DU) students on Sunday demanded the resignation of the health minister and mayors of Dhaka City Corporations for their failure in tackling dengue outbreak.
The students also burned their effigies protesting their failure to effectively fight against the ongoing dengue menace and harshly criticized Health Minister Zahid Maleque and mayor Sayeed Khokon for their irresponsible comments over dengue outbreak. Earlier, the students formed a human chain at Raju Memorial Monument under the banner of Muktijuddha Mancha to protest the authorities’ failure over the issue.
Besides, another group of DU students also protested at the university authorities’ negligence in controlling dengue at the halls.
They also criticized the varsity authorities for obstructing funeral prayers for DU student Firoz Kabir, who died of dengue, on the campus, on Friday.
Hundreds of students in Jahangirnagar University also protested against the inaction of the university authorities amid the ongoing dengue outbreak in the city.
They brought out a silent rally from the university’s Central Shaheed Minar premises at 10:00am on Sunday and later staged sit-in in front of Old Administrative Building till 2:30pm, reports our JU correspondent.
At the rally, they also raised several demands, including prompt action in tackling dengue outbreak in each hall, dengue tests at the university’s medical centre and compensation to the family of U Khein Nu, a JU student who died of dengue on Saturday.
The students also threatened to boycott classes and examinations if their demands are not met immediately.
Irfanul Islam, a first-year student of the Department of Drama and Dramatics at JU, said, “We don’t want to lose any of our friends like U Khein Nu. This is why we are asking the authorities to take proper steps.”
