DU Correspondent :
A group of Dhaka University (DU) students continued their demonstration for 3rd consecutive day on Thursday and locked the academic and administrative buildings, demanding cancellation of the affiliation of seven colleges with the university.
In the morning, the agitating students boycotted classes and examination and locked the main entrances of Registrar, Arts, Curzon Hall, Mokarram Bhaban, Law Faculty and Business Faculty, Institute of Modern Languages,
Institute of Education and Research, and Social Science buildings. After that, they staged a sit-in programme at Memory Eternal premises at 11:00am.
DU Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani said, we had requested the students to return to classes and to sit with the university administration to resolve any problems. But they rejected our proposal.
On the other hand, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) also staged a programme at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla at 1:30 pm where they urged the protesting students to return to their classes. They also said that the seven colleges affiliation problem would be solved in the first week of August.
At around 2:30pm, when BCL activists tried to break the lock of Registrar Building to submit a memorandum to DU Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Muhammad Samad for a permanent solution to the seven college-related crises, a dispute took place between BCL activists and the demonstrators at that time.
Meanwhile, a group of BCL activists allegedly attacked DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary Akhtar Hossain for supporting the protesting students. They also assaulted the female students, said the witnesses.
Regarding the attack, Akhtar Hossain told the journalists, “We’re standing at Mall Chattar. At that time, a group of Chhatra League activists led by BCL Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall unit Assistant Secretary Rabbi Haque suddenly attacked us and also assaulted the female students who were with us.’
But the Chattra League leader Rabbi denied his involvement in the attack.
The agitated students staged a demonstration programme at 3:00pm at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla protesting attack on Akhtar Hossain and for assaulting female students. DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur and injured DUCSU Social Welfare Secretary Akhtar Hossain were present at the demonstration.
“BCL activists walloped Akhtar Hossain for supporting us. We will not return to classes until university administration gives us a written assurance to cancel the affiliation of the colleges, said Shakil Mia, spokesman of the movement.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) on Monday expressed its solidarity with the students’ demand and called upon the protesting students to go back to classes, saying it will take effective measures after discussions with administration and Education Ministry after Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman returns from China.
