A Dhaka court has cleared five people, including former Ducsu vice president Nurul Haque Nur, from charges in a case filed over the alleged rape of a female student of Dhaka University.
The four others are Nazmul Hassan Shohag and Md Saiful Islam, joint conveners of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council; Nazmul Huda, former vice president of the organization’s DU unit; and Abdullah Hil Baki, a DU student and an activist of the organization.
Judge Md Habibur Rahman Siddiki of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 2 passed the order on Wednesday after the case’s investigating officer appealed to relieve them, according to media reports.
The court also set November 30 for the hearing on charge-framing against Hasan Al Mamun, former convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, the only one against whom the police have pressed charges.
Mamun was sent to jail by a Dhaka court after he surrendered before it on Tuesday. The court had also rejected his bail plea.
Inspector Aslam Uddin Mollah of Lalbagh police station, where the case was lodged on September 21 last year on charges of rape and abetment of rape, submitted the charge sheet against Mamun on June 14 this year.

On the basis of their findings, police had asked the court to exempt Nur and the four other accused in the case.
According to case details, Mamun and the female student had been in a romantic relationship since they first met back in July 2018.
Mamun allegedly raped her at his home in Old Dhaka’s Lalbagh area with promises of marriage on January 3 last year. The girl was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the help of Shohag on January 12.
The rape survivor had claimed that Shohag had obstructed her from contacting her friends and journalists following Mamun’s instructions.
“In the meantime, Mamun agreed to marry me as I kept insisting on it, later he started ignoring me,” she alleged in the case statement.
On February 9, Shohag called her to the Sadarghat area to resolve the matter. She and Shohag had breakfast in a restaurant there.
Shohag then took her to Chandpur via launch after tempting her, but Mamun did not show up. She demanded that she be returned to Dhaka immediately. On their way back, Shohag raped her in the launch cabin, she claimed.
On September 21 last year, she filed the case with Lalbagh police against six people, including Nur.
