A Dhaka court yesterday accepted charge sheet submitted to the court against Iftekhar Abedin in a case lodged about the alleged unnatural death of his wife and Dhaka University (DU) student Elma Chowdhury alias Meghna.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu bakar Siddique of Dhaka CMM Court passed the order after the victim’s father gave no objection to the charge sheet of the case filed by the investigation agency, Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The court, however, dropped the names of Iftekhar’s father Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Md Amin and mother Shirin Amin from the accused list, accepting a plea of DB. The court also sent the case documents to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka as it is now ready to start the trial.
Investigation Officer and DB Inspector Qazi Shariful Islam submitted the charge sheet on May 31 against Iftekhar Abedin for inciting Meghla to commit suicide.
According to the charge sheet, on the day of her death, Meghla wanted to go out, but Iftekhar barred her from going out and locked her in a room after scolding and physically abusing her. At one stage, Meghla allegedly committed suicide inside a room.
