Dhaka University (DU) for the first time has opened a platform ‘Centre on Budget and Policy’ to assist the government in budget formulation through providing accurate information and statistics.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr A A M S Arefin Siddique on Wednesday inaugurated the newly established centre as chief guest at a ceremony at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Auditorium on the campus.
Arefin said the centre would assist the government providing accurate statistics and direction during the formulation of national budgets.
He urged the researchers of the centre to work sincerely for the betterment of mass people.
Speaking on the occasion as special guest, Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman said the national budget reflects the government’s development philosophy, priorities and approaches towards equity and social justice for attaining economic stability, growth and welfare of the country. “It is very important in today’s world to build capacity to conduct sound budget and policy analysis and participate effectively in policy debates,” he added.
The BB governor hoped the centre will work as a platform to make the budget formulation and implementation process more inclusive, transparent and responsive to the needs of all segments of the society.
Followed by the inauguration session, a review discussion on the book “Inclusive Finance and Sustainable Development” written by Dr Atiur Rahman was held.
BIBM Director General Dr Towfiq Ahmad Chowdhury, DU Business Faculty Dean Prof Shibli Ruaiyatul Islam, Agrani Bank Board of Directors Chairman Prof Dr Khandaker Bazlul Huq and professors of different departments of Dhaka University took part in the discussion with DU treasurer and chairman of the centre Prof Dr M Kamal Uddin in the chair.
